Boston Scientific gets approval on lead device

... The product, which Boston Scientific plans to launch in July, features a deflectable tip for precise placement of the lead even in difficult-to- access branch vessels on the left side of the heart, the company said in a statement.

A lead is an insulated wire that carries the heart signal to the implanted device and delivers energy from the device to the heart.

In most cases, leads are passed into the heart through veins.

The approval comes one day after Boston Scientific announced FDA officials had lifted all restrictions at the company's Guidant plant in Minnesota.

The restrictions were place in 2005 after device defects linked to seven deaths prompted recalls.
