Hockey mom's life-saving campaign hits the road; Arena ...

... First stop in Peggy Montague's battle against a "silent killer" that claims more young lives than cancer and traffic accidents combined is Wainfleet.

After that, she plans to concentrate her efforts on having the $4,000 devices placed at Teeder Kennedy and Westside arenas in Port Colborne.

"Every arena needs to have one, and they're so easy to use.

Everyone can save a life," said Montague, who first became aware of the absence of debrillators in arenas last fall when her now 15-year-old son experienced an irregular heartbeat during midget hockey tryouts.

Warren Montague is receiving ongoing treatment after he was diagnosed with heart arrhythmia, a condition that last year claimed the lives of 7,000 young Canadians.

"That's more than cancer and traffic accidents combined, and these are kids we're talking about," Montague said.

"But With the Welland leg of the the campaign a success - $8,000 was raised, enough to buy two of the heavy-duty, battery-powered devices - and with the Kinsmen championing the cause in Pelham, Montague looked west to Wainfleet for phase two.
