Planned Boys & Girls Club gets $5.8M gift... Mrs. Fels recently donated $100,000 to the Pearle L. Crawford Memorial Library building project. Mr. Fels, who came here from the Netherlands when he was about 17, attended Nichols College on a four-year Rotary Club scholarship that he said gave him a “good start in life.” He called James L. Conrad Sr., Nichols College founder and one of the founders of the Webster Dudley Boys & Girls Club, his mentor. “If you are successful, you have an obligation to put your services to work in the community where it can do good,” said Mr. Fels, who said he is reluctant to bring attention to his philanthropic efforts. “I’m just doing my part.” Tony Poti, executive director of the club, called the Fels donation “unbelievable generosity. “They don’t just give money, they also give their time and are involved in running the club and planning the new building,” Mr. Poti said. “We are very fortunate to have them.” Ground was broken for the 23,500-square-foot building Nov. 25, with completion scheduled for next November. Michael Newton, another doctor and nurse also helped the man before a paramedic arrived and used a defibrillator to restart his heart.Coincidentally, the paramedic, Terry Ritter, was the husband of Brink's running partner, Danielle Ritter. Brink helped by cutting off the downed runner's shirt to check for a pulse and later taking the man's blood pressure, while Danielle Ritter held off traffic.Brink said she visited the man in the hospital Sunday morning, where he shook her hand with thanks. His name is not being released, but Newton said he is doing fine."This was one of those weird things where it was five years to the day," Newton said.Brink, who has been a nurse for 10 years, said she chose the career because her father suffered from heart problems.But she doesn't want the spotlight.
